BulAtom became a member of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMR)
By decision of the Alliance Secretariat of 30 April 2024, BulAtom was accepted as a full member of the European Industrial Alliance for Small Modular Reactors (SMR).
The establishment of the Alliance is a result of the Resolution on Small Modular Reactors (2023/2109(INI)) adopted by the European Parliament on December 12, 2023. It said the decision was based on: “that nuclear energy is a zero-emissions technology that does not lead to air pollution, and therefore small modular reactors have the potential to contribute to the achievement of EU targets.”
On February 6, 2024, the European Commission launched the European Industrial Alliance for Small Modular Reactors (SMR) together with its “Communication on a recommended 2040 emissions reduction target”.
Nucleareurope, of which BulAtom is also a member, has been played an important role in the creation of this Alliance, thanks to the work undertaken as Chair of the European SMR pre-Partnership Steering Committee together with SNETP, ENSREG and the European Commission, and their outreach to Members of the European Parliament that culminated in the overwhelming adoption of an Own Initiative Report on SMRs.
On 29-30 May 2024, the 1st General Assembly of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMR) will be held in Brussels. At this event, the structure of the Alliance – the Governing Board, creation of Technical Working Groups and the topics to be covered will be introduced. The consolidated eligibility criteria for evaluating SMR projects potentially supported by the Alliance will also be presented and discussed at the forum. On the second day, the objective, activities and expected outcomes of each proposed Technical Working Group will be presented, offering members the chance to select their preferred working group(s) for participation.
As a full member of the Alliance, BulAtom has the ambitions and desire for its representatives to take an active part in the Technical working groups so that Bulgaria can continue to have a significant contribution and role in the development of policies and actions for the development of European nuclear energy and in particular the Small Modular Reactors.
